Thiruchitrambalam is a feel-good slice of life family drama and a cute romantic comedy. While it borrows from VIP and Yaaradi Nee Mohini, it does not fall into cliches. Dhanush shines as a timid youngster who tries to make amends with his past in this film. He is supported by a chirpy Shobana, who brings in laughs through her banter comedy with Thiru.
The movie is set in a middle class apartment building and revolves around the lives of people living in the same complex. Pazham (Dhanush) works as a food delivery boy and lives with his grandfather and his father who is a police officer. He has a good relationship with his childhood friend-cum-neighbour Shobana (Nithya Menen). He does not have much ambition in life and spends most of his time drinking beer with his grandfather. However, he faces a tragedy that will change his life forever.
In his latest film, Dhanush delivers a powerful performance as the titular character. He convincingly displays the raw emotions of a man in pain and grief. The nuances in his facial expressions and the intensity with which he delivers his lines are a treat to watch. The director Mithran Jawahar has crafted an interesting story that explores the issues of a modern Tamil family.
There are a few small flaws in the movie but they don’t affect the overall experience. The music by Anirudh is melodious and suits the narrative. The cinematography by Om Prakash is decent and captures the emotions of the characters well.
Besides Dhanush, the other cast also does a fine job. The director has picked the right actors to portray the roles of these ordinary families. Bharathiraja and Prakash Raj are effective in their respective roles. The actresses Raashi Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar are adequate in their roles.
