Mathematics is present everywhere. It is present in every aspect of our lives may it be directly or indirectly. The furniture we sit on is built using mathematics, the cars we drive are built using some mathematical principles, the buildings we see are all built using some mathematical calculations. Thus, mathematics is a very important part of our lives. And we must have some knowledge about it.The circles are a shape in geometry. They are one of the most common shapes present. They are a special type of ellipse, where the two foci are coincident and the eccentricity is 0. All points on the circumference of the circle are equidistant from the center of the circle. A circle can also be defined as the shape consisting of all the points in the plane which are equidistant from a fixed point in the plane which is known as the center of the circle. 

The distance between the center and any point on the circumference of the circle is called the radius. And the distance between any two points on the circumference which are directly opposite to each other is known as diameter. The diameter is twice the length of the radius.

A line segment joining any 2 points on the circumference of the circle is known as a chord. The diameter is the longest chord of a circle. A Chord divides the circle into 2 parts: Major Segment and Minor Segment. A line passing through any 2 points on the circumference of the circle is called secant.

What is the area of a circle?

The area of circle is the space occupied by the circle on a 2-dimensional plane. The area can also be defined as the space enclosed within the circumference of the circle. We can calculate the area of the circle using the radius.The unit of the area is m2, cm2, or inches2. The formula to calculate the area of the circle is as π times the square of the radius.

π (Pi) is a mathematical constant that is defined as the ratio of the circumference to the diameter.

Now sometimes we do not have the radius available directly. So, we have to use different formulas and methods to find the radius first then we will be able to use the formula.

Some useful formulas can be:

  1. Diameter = 2 x Radius
  2. Area = π x {(Diameter)2/4}
  3. Area = (Circumference)2/4π

Applications of the Area of the Circle

The area of a circle has quite some applications.

  • It can be used to calculate the area of a circular plot or field. It is also used to define the area a sports field must be to maintain uniformity throughout the world.
  • We can also use it to calculate the area of a tabletop to make a similar one or use it to find the area of the table cloth needed. 
  • GPS also relies on circles to provide us with proper navigation. It uses it to calculate the distance by using a certain circle theory to calculate the distance between the satellite and the point recognized. 
  • Any object having a circular face or circular structure is built keeping the concept of the area of the circle in mind. Traffic cones, road signs, dining plates, the pop can we drink soda and coke in are all some notable examples. 

So, circles are quite important having so many real-life applications. A life without circles would be so bizarre, all the planets would be square, the cars and buses would not exist as the wheel would not be possible, also scientific terms like rolling friction would not be possible. Life without circles would be a life full of friction.
