QB Aaron Rodgers made his return to MetLife Stadium with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith while trailing 19-17 at halftime. Rodgers was sacked four times while New York CB Sauce Gardner battled Pittsburgh WR DK Metcalf every snap for every play.

Tight Ends
Steelers pass catchers will be put through their paces all afternoon by Darrelle Revis and Jalen Wilson, two second-year cornerbacks of New York’s secondary.
Both Darrelle Revis and Jalen Wilson will face challenges in trying to match up against two talented tight ends during a new era for New York’s secondary.
After being penalized on their opening play of the third quarter, Pittsburgh continued its drive downfield with consecutive running plays to move into scoring position.
TE Jonnu Smith ran for first downs on 10- and 11-yard carries to bring them within Cleveland 42-yard line; on subsequent play Jaylen Warren got stuffed for first down, but their drive continued nonetheless;
Chris Boswell kicked a 31-yard field goal to bring Pittsburgh within striking distance at 9-3 at end of third quarter.
Both teams had field goals in the fourth quarter. The Jets took the lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by rookie RB Lamar Miller before the Steelers responded with one from TE Connor Heyward for a 1-yard score to tie things at 7-7 with just under two minutes remaining in play. Boswell kicked a 53-yard field goal off their next possession making the score 16-6 with under two minutes left in play.
Although they fell to both their season openers last year, the Steelers have managed to take four of six meetings with the Jets since 2007.
Furthermore, this streak means they have never lost in regular season competition against this foe since 2007.
In 2024, the Jets were one of the top teams against opposing tight ends in terms of defense. They allowed only 139 receptions totalling 2,003 yards but these receivers still caught 10 touchdown passes!
Additionally, they ranked fourth among teams against tight ends aligned in slot positions by only allowing them to accumulate 601 receiving yards total.
The New York Jets strengthened their pass defense this offseason through the signing of free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis and draft selection of second-year cornerback Jalen Wilson.
Revis is one of the league’s most productive corners, ranking eighth for interceptions and 17th in passes defended in his career.
Wilson should fit seamlessly into their new-look defense thanks to his speed and route running ability that can match up well against various defenders.

Wide Receivers
DK Metcalf stands out in this matchup as a result of his new, lucrative contract from the Jets this offseason. He’ll likely face off against CB Sauce Gardner for most man-to-man snaps; both players possess strong chemistry that allows them to limit each other’s production; it may come down to who is more adept at reading coverage and making adjustments than their opponent.
Metcalf was fourth in deep target rate last season, covering at least 20 yards downfield on 31.5 percent of his routes. Additionally, he tied for eighth in career receiving touchdowns with 48 in six seasons.
Metcalf was targeted on a lower percentage of his routes when aligned out wide (21.1%) than when placed inside (19.1%). He has an outstanding track record against man-to-man coverage; over the past two years, he’s allowed only one reception per game.
Calvin Austin will have much to prove in his second season with the team. Although he ranked 10th for target share among wide receivers last season, he struggled in red zone situations and averaged only 4.8 receptions per game – well below his career average of 6.
Luckily he shares an excellent relationship with Jermaine Gresham from tight end and can expect plenty of targets on short and deep routes alike.
Justin Fields made an immediate impact during his rookie year with the Steelers. He amassed more than 200 yards in three of 10 starts and averaged 7.8 yards per pass attempt on average.
But facing off against New York could prove much tougher; they allow an astonishing average first down play-rate of 4.9 yards per play while only five teams allowed higher third-down rates than them.
In the first quarter, both teams traded possessions. Pittsburgh began the second quarter with its initial possession ending in a punt but managed to keep possession for most of the period and capitalized when Xavier Gipson fumbled the ball and it led to Braelon Allen scoring from 6-yards out for their team’s touchdown run. Chris Boswell’s 56-yard field goal sealed their win.
Running Backs
The Pittsburgh Steelers quickly took control of this matchup early, leading by double figures at halftime. Both offenses utilized their ground games on seven of eight possessions in the first half – minus one Jets defensive stop – including on Fields’ second drive that went 80 yards in 12 plays before scoring on Breece Hall’s 2-yard touchdown catch.
Later in the third quarter, Fields and company returned to working the ground game with an 8-play, 67-yard drive which culminated with Braelon Allen scoring 5-yard run before Folk’s 51-yard field goal made their comeback possible.
The Jets defense was an unstable mess this season due to injuries and inexperience in their front seven, giving Pittsburgh’s receivers ample open space.
Miles Killebrew led in kickoff return tackles while Patrick Queen finished second amongst defensive players for forced fumbles with 10.
Still, there were bright spots – especially within special teams where Miles Killebrew led in kickoff return tackles (5!) while Queen was second on defense for forced fumbles (10).
Killebrew excelled not only at his return duties but also excelled at coverage against wide receivers. Queen has long been one of the Steelers’ premier slot cornerbacks and will likely remain so moving forward against deep threats like Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay. Killebrew demonstrated exceptional slot cornerback capabilities throughout.
The Pittsburgh Steelers tied Minnesota for league leadership with 33 takeaways. They were also tied with Buffalo for most fumble recoveries, which will be interesting to observe after giving away many free points early in the season.
Their defense must improve at stopping runs more effectively while finding consistency with pass rushes led by Quinnen Williams and Lavonte David up front.
Offensive Tackles
Fields was an accomplished passer for the Steelers during his time there, though his accuracy suffered at times. Opposing defenses swatted away his passes on 2.5% of targets (the highest percentage in NFL last season).
Due to these poor completion rates, Justin Fields made several errors including four interceptions and seven fumble losses which contributed to an error-laden season for him and led to costly plays with multiple interceptions and lost fumbles that may never recover from.
Fields’ struggles continued into his debut game with the Jets. He threw an interception to Jets CB Darrelle Revis in the second quarter and was benched, leading to numerous miscues on offense resulting in only one touchdown for New York.
First half was a thrilling battle as both teams traded possessions. Chris Boswell scored a 56-yard field goal for the Jets before Pittsburgh answered with their own 51-yard kick by Fields followed by Jonnu Smith receiving it and rookie running back Braelon Allen scoring on 6-yard runs.
At halftime, New York trailed by one point. The Steelers then responded by making another field goal from 51 yards out before receiving Fields’ 5-yard touchdown reception and 6-yard run touchdown from rookie running back Braelon Allen’s 5-yard field goal attempt was successful by rookie RB Braelon Allen to seal victory for them over New York’s opponent.
In the fourth quarter, the Jets attempted a comeback but were ultimately unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh held off to capture their inaugural win of 2018.
New York’s offensive line struggled in the first half, allowing three sacks and six pressures in just the opening half alone – more pressures on opposing quarterbacks in one quarter since 2023!
New York was limited in their running game during the 2024 season, averaging only 3.2 yards per rush attempt on average – the lowest mark in the league and following a poor showing against the Steelers in Week 1, as highlighted in the Pittsburgh Steelers Vs New York Jets Match Player Stats analysis.
They brought in Matt MacChesney as the new RB coach to improve this aspect of their rushing attack and are likely to utilize both short and medium yardage formations to get the ball moving this season.
