Cowboys and Packers have enjoyed an intense rivalry since both franchises’ founding as franchises in the 1960s. Over this time, both teams participated in two consecutive NFL Championship Games, known as Ice Bowls; both won. Bart Starr’s last-minute quarterback sneak won them this contest before going on to become champions at Super Bowl I.
Additionally, Green Bay has won three more postseason games at AT&T Stadium than Dallas has won overall. At present, Dallas holds a 5-4 regular-season record against Green Bay while their playoff record stands at 3-1 against them.
This year is the third consecutive time the Cowboys and Packers have met in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. Over those three seasons, these teams have played four previous playoff games between them including 2017 NFC Championship game which Dallas Cowboys won.
Furthermore, five regular season meetings between these rivals occurred with each winning three of those meetings combined for 58 first downs which is an all-time high total in this rivalry’s history.

The Cowboys and Packers enjoy one of the highest regarded rivalries in all of sports. Over four decades, including nine postseason meetings, these teams have met 40 times with 22 victories going to Green Bay; once in 1967 when temperatures at kickoff reached freezing point dubbed as “Ice Bowl”.
Though their season got off to a slow start, the Cowboys remain competitive in the NFC East. Coming into this match against Green Bay with high hopes but coming away without victory was disappointing for both sides. Looking ahead, they hope that second half performance can see them back into playoff contention.
After an ineffective first quarter, the Cowboys struck hard in the second half with their opening drive of the second half – scoring 14 points in four plays!
Prescott connected with Turpin for 15-yard gain on third down before hitting Pickens for 28. By taking advantage of good field position, Brandon McManus kicked a short field goal to give Dallas a 23-20 advantage.
However, the Packers did not give up. With an impressive drive that began with Josh Jacobs running 29 yards to reach Dallas 1-yard line with less than two minutes remaining and ended when Love threw a quick slant pass to Doubs who raced downfield for the touchdown to create the first tie in franchise history.
With Love’s extra point, both teams advanced to overtime. While neither was successful on its initial attempts, Green Bay got another shot when Markquese Bell blocked Love’s second try at conversion. Soon thereafter, Green Bay punted to Dallas’ 10-yard line where Juanyeh Thomas stripped it and fell on it, tying the score at 40-40 and creating history since 1969 when only overtime games occurred between these rivals.
Green Bay and Dallas combined for an unprecedented 58 first downs in this game, setting a franchise record. Additionally, both teams scored on five out of six red zone trips and the Packers totaled 436 yards of offense while holding onto possession for 35:33 hours – all impressive figures for any franchise contest!
Javonte Williams
Javonte Williams led the Cowboys with 84 yards on 10 carries and helped their offense gain 289 total yards, scoring one of two rushing touchdowns for Dallas. Eddie Lacy of Green Bay amassed 151 yards from 17 carries for Green Bay’s team.
Beginning the first quarter with momentum on their side, the visitors seized it quickly. Dallas’ Marist Liufau fumble allowed Green Bay’s Dwayne Harris punt returner another chance at scoring, yet again. Unfortunately for Dallas they did not seize this opportunity to score.
Dallas quickly took control after halftime. On their second drive, Dak Prescott connected with George Pickens on a 28-yard pass before taking direct snap from 1-yard line and muscled his way across goalline for Dallas’ first touchdown of the game.
However, this would be the last time Dallas would lead. Green Bay took advantage of Dallas’ mistakes to put together a long scoring drive of their own and ultimately overtook Dallas by one score. On their third drive, Dallas received the ball at their 2-yard line; however, instead of scoring they settled for Chris Boniol kicking a 22-yard field goal as their best shot at victory.
This scoring drive marked the second-longest in franchise history and tied a mark set during their 1980 victory at Tampa. Additionally, it marked a historic long scoring drive by an opposing team in this rivalry series.
In the fourth quarter, both teams traded touchdowns. Mason Crosby scored a 51-yard field goal for Green Bay to take an early lead before an ensuing fumble by Brandon McManus allowed Dallas back in with the ball nearing red zone territory – unfortunately they failed to capitalize and settled for Brandon McManus’ 26-yard field goal instead. It ended 40-40, the first tie since 1969 between these teams since Dez Bryant won it all against them via late quarterback sneak in 2014.
Next game for Dallas will be against Philadelphia Eagles who they last met at NFC Divisional Playoff when Dez Bryant won it with late quarterback sneak by Dez Bryant after an all out battle of quarterback sneak play won them victory!
Tramon Williams
Williams spent 14 seasons playing for four teams – including the Packers – totaling 593 solo tackles, 126 assists, 4.5 sacks and 13 fumble recoveries during that period. Additionally he earned Pro Bowl selection in 2012 before winning championship with Arizona Cardinals in 2023; now serving as studio analyst on Fox Sports Sunday Night Football broadcast.
Green Bay found themselves trailing early in its opening possession, but two first downs put them back in business. On their second possession, a running play set up a screen pass to Jacobs who made an explosive 40-yard gain before Mason Crosby kicked a 51-yard field goal for its inaugural points of the game.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took charge in the second quarter, striking for quick gains to Ferguson for seven yards and Tolbert for 19.
On third-and-10 at Green Bay 46-yard line he hit Pickens with an 8-yard strike that allowed him to catch it under pressure while breaking several tackles and racing all the way into the end zone for their second touchdown of the game.
The Packers responded with an 80-yard, 12-play drive that consumed most of the fourth quarter’s final play. Doubs’ quick slant earned 16 yards and set up Brooks for an end zone run play that earned two points after an illegal contact penalty was assessed against Antonio Brown.
On their next possession, the Cowboys went back to work only to be stopped short by another penalty call at third and 10 at Green Bay’s 35-yard line – this time on third down when Love attempted a handoff and was called for holding.
Even so, five trips into red zone yielded good results while 436 yards of offense was gained over 34:33 of possession time for an impressive final total.
They now boast one of two NFC teams with winning records against Green Bay Packers as they share both regular-season victories among NFC clubs against whom they share regular season wins overall with one NFC opponent – this makes for another exciting finale in Week 8 against Green Bay!
