Quarterbacks
The Los Angeles Chargers sent a strong signal that they are ready to challenge Kansas City Chiefs for division title with an impressive offensive performance on Friday night in Sao Paulo that saw quarterback Justin Herbert record career-best 318 yards passing and three touchdowns.
Los Angeles won 27-21 against reigning AFC West champions Kansas City, snapping their seven-game losing streak against them.
Patrick Mahomes had an outstanding season against the Chargers last season when he threw for 417 yards and four touchdowns, but struggled early in the second half due to inadequate pass protection, leading to several pressures and short throws from pressures on pass plays.
Mahomes overcame these difficulties though by connecting with receiver Hollywood Brown on fourth down for 49-yard completion on fourth down with less than four minutes remaining to help bring Kansas City within 27-21.
Mahomes had to use every bit of his improvisational talent during the final minutes to recover his team’s fortunes, with safety Derwin James Jr. attacking as an unblocked blitzer to force Mahomes out of his pocket and force him to scramble out of its path; yet Mahomes managed to stay calm, complete a perfect intermediate pass to Travis Kelce for a 37-yard touchdown catch and complete his perfect playbook by keeping his cool and completing a perfect intermediate pass with 37 yards remaining for an unblocked blitzer attack by safety Derwin James Jr.
With two minutes and 34 seconds remaining on the clock and on Los Angeles 43-yard line, Mahomes found himself under pressure from a blitzing Kansas City team. But with his cool head intact he managed to avoid it and complete a 20-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Allen that gave them a lead they wouldn’t surrender.
Tight Ends
Kelce became only the seventh tight end in NFL history to record at least seven seasons with 1000 yards or more receiving. Additionally, he set Chiefs team records for receptions and two-point conversions while matching both Pro Football Hall of Fame QB Len Dawson and former TE Otis Taylor’s streak of at least 80 receptions during one year.
In 2022, he came within 16 yards of posting his eighth 1,000-yard season for the Chiefs – becoming only the second tight end since former San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle achieved this feat twice between 1986-1987. Last season he finished sixth overall among NFL receivers with 1,336 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns – setting a franchise-record total for receiving touchdowns.
Kelce has amassed more than 600 first down receptions throughout his career – the fourth-most for any tight end ever in NFL history. Together with Mahomes, they have connected on 54 touchdown passes – more than any quarterback-tight end combination has managed in franchise history and is tied for most touchdown connections between quarterback and tight end this season in the league.
Kelce’s playing days may soon come to an end in Kansas City. According to insider Matt McMullen, they have begun planning for life without him and may look for replacement weapons at his position during the 2026 draft. According to McMullen’s sources, several top-end options will likely be on their radar in this year’s draft.
Joly, Stowers and Klare are potential candidates for the Chiefs to consider as they make their first-round selections this draft season.
All three TE prospects have proven their worth over time and could provide depth for Kansas City. It appears more likely, though, that they will select someone to help immediately on special teams or in the backfield, potentially postponing tight end selection until Day 2. Regardless, planning for life after Kelce should begin sooner rather than later for Kansas City fans.
