Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder is making a serious push for this year’s KIA NBA Clutch Player of the Year award.
As one of three finalist, including Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and Denver’s Jamal Murray. All three players have shown incredible grit in clutch situations during this season; however, Gilgeous-Alexander leads both average clutch points per game average clutch points total clutch points scorer.
He boasts the league’s highest true shooting percentage (66.8) during fourth-quarter moments and boasts a fantastic assist-to-turnover ratio (20.8). Simply put, he has done everything he could to help his team secure victory in that quarter.
Though his team may not have much chance at winning the championship this season, 21-year-old is an outstanding star who should be considered for every major end-of-season award. While he might not garner as much support as Nikola Jokic or Victor Wembanyama would likely receive for such awards, earning unanimous nods would mark an incredible achievement in itself.
Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic recorded his 179th double-double ever on Wednesday – only the third player ever to accomplish such a feat in regular season play – as part of his league-leading averages of 16.9 points, 11.5 rebounds and 10.1 assists per game.
With just four series played since last March that felt like soul-crushing epics under his belt since, Wilt Chamberlain may just fall short by four consecutive triple-doubles compared to one from Jokic in two years!
Jokic wasn’t his typical self in Game 1, failing to drive Minnesota out of its zone and dominating his opponents inside. Yet, he still managed to help lead Denver to victory, scoring two straight victories for them with an overtime win that closed out an NBA-record five-game Christmas Day slate.
At one point late in the fourth quarter, Jokic received the ball in the post with Anthony Edwards trailing behind. With two dribbles, he could have put away this game – instead opting for caution over going all-out and only scoring a layup.
Lossless shooting sensation Nikola Jokic may make headlines for his otherworldly abilities, yet championship journeys require endurance as much as excellence. Denver needs Jokic to have enough energy reserves stored up so he can come through when called upon with decisiveness without burnout or fatigue limiting him.
The game was close throughout most of the second half, and Denver took a one-point lead with under two minutes remaining in regulation before Isaiah Hartenstein caught an alley-oop pass from Corey Brewer and connected on an off-balance 3-point shot that tied it all up at 72-72.
Teams exchanged free throws through the final minute and into overtime, where Anthony Edwards won it all with 26 points and 12 rebounds – not only that but he hit the game-winner himself! Anthony Edwards scored both on defense and offense to help seal their win!
Dennis Schroder
Dennis Schroder scored 22 points as Oklahoma City Thunder defeated Minnesota Timberwolves 113-105 to extend their winning streak.
They are now the NBA’s top team by half-a-game over Cleveland Cavaliers. Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault praised Luguentz Dort’s lockdown defense performance against Miami Heat, saying that it distinguished him from other second-round draft picks:
“He really makes these guys work for it; not so much by clamping them down but by forcing them physically exert themselves and staying on edge all of the time.” Daigneault said. He added, that his lockdown defense set him apart from other second-round draft picks:
“he really makes them work for their stuff,” saying that its ability “makes him stand out among others among second round draft picks and second round draft picks like himself from other second round draft picks; in his remarks Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault also complimented Luguentz Dort for his performance against Miami Heat Heat, saying that his lockdown defense sets him apart as one of his own from others in terms of forcing physical exertions, forcing players physically to exert themselves physically exert themselves constantly when required to perform by forcing physical exertions from forces such as him. Its not that he’s clamping them down, per se but forcing them physically exert themselves physically until their stuff,” Daigneault stated “and be on edge all the time”.
Oklahoma City seized control in the fourth quarter, starting with Jared McCain’s bounce-and-go three-point shot that bounced before going in. Soon thereafter, Isaiah Hartenstein connected with McCain again for another no-look, behind-the-back pass he dunked home putting Oklahoma City ahead 91-80.
Oklahoma City’s offense was in full swing, scoring a season-high 101 points in the opening half against Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Now unbeaten for seven straight games, they look to keep their unblemished record intact when facing Minnesota on Thursday. Meanwhile, they hope to come out stronger from a tough loss against Milwaukee Bucks earlier in the day.
Anthony Edwards
Anthony Edwards delivered a remarkable Game 2 performance for Minnesota, scoring 30 points (10-25 FG, 3-11 3Pt FG and 7-9 Free Throw FT), 10 rebounds, two assists and being in for 40 minutes of action as Minnesota evened their series 1-1. Despite suffering a sore right knee in recent days, Edwards looked fully healthy during this contest and will likely become an invaluable player as the playoffs unfold.
Minnesota took control with 38.5 seconds remaining when Tyler Layson hit his go-ahead 3-pointer, helping hold off Oklahoma City’s late comeback attempt and secure victory through several key actions including defensive rebounding and blocking Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from completing another pass play that helped seal it for them.
