Cowboys vs. Eagles

Cowboys and Eagles have met 19 regular-season times since 1960 when Philadelphia joined as an expansion team.

Since 1970 when the NFL-AFL merger occurred, these two teams have become division rivals, meeting twice every year ever since then – this rivalry remains one of the highlights in NFC East, always playing out with great intensity.

In 1960, Philadelphia defeated Dallas 16-7 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. But during their second meeting in 1987 at Texas Stadium, an overly replacement-laden Dallas team crushed them 41-22 in what became known as “Blue Jersey Game”, due to a controversy involving Tom Landry running up scores since Super Bowl V.

In 1992, the Eagles defeated Dallas for the first time since 1980 by posting an impressive 38-point differential and earning their first playoff berth under Donovan McNabb. Furthermore, this win ended a 13-game road divisional losing streak against them.

Few years later, these teams met again in an intense Monday Night Football battle that featured plenty of scoring.

Philadelphia opened up scoring when quarterback Michael Vick connected with tight end Jason Witten for a 1-yard touchdown pass before Dallas scored with kicker David Buehler’s 50-yard field goal attempt and running back Marion Barber scoring a 3-yard touchdown run from running back Marion Barber.

Philadelphia tried rallying late in the fourth quarter, but an accidental fumble by defensive end Sam Williams and botched punt return by safety Alijah Clark prevented Philadelphia from reaching red zone territory.

In their final meeting in 2000 at Texas Stadium, the Eagles prevailed in an incredible thriller known as “Pickle Juice Game”; so named because their players used pickle juice to stay hydrated during an otherwise scorching heat wave. Furthermore, this game also witnessed one of the longest comebacks ever witnessed by either franchise.

Defense

After a restful week off, the Cowboys defense was rejuvenated and ready to face Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas forced two fumbles on Philadelphia’s initial two drives, scoring off one with DeMarcus Lawrence’s strip-sack score.

Additionally, Dallas dominated in play action with Dak Prescott completing 9 of 11 passes for 174 yards with an touchdown off play action play.

After falling behind 17-3 early, the Eagles took an 18-3 lead after one quarter, but an impressive Cowboys team came back and won on Brandon Aubrey’s 42-yard field goal with 2:34 remaining to complete an amazing comeback and claim sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

On December 22, 2006, the Cowboys and Eagles met in Philadelphia with a wild card playoff berth for both teams on the line.

The victor would claim the sixth and final wild card spot in the NFC, while any loss all but eliminated playoff contention for that side.

This game proved a tough defensive contest, while it dealt a devastating blow to Philadelphia when Terrell Owens was hit with a horse-collar tackle by Roy Williams during halftime and had to leave due to injuries suffered due to this play.

David Akers of Philadelphia struck gold with a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter, giving them a 7-3 lead.

Dallas responded quickly, however, scoring on Tavon Austin’s 10-yard touchdown run late in the fourth. Akers missed another 56-yard field goal late on but Dallas held off Philadelphia on fourth down goal to keep it close.

Before their game on Sunday night, the Cowboys honored Roy Kneeland’s life with a moment of silence and video tribute. Kneeland was beloved leader both on the field and within their locker room, who will be dearly missed by those who knew him.

Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts powered through two rushing touchdowns against Dallas Cowboys’ defense for two rushing scores that put this unit under immense strain for two touchdowns in a matter of minutes, placing additional stress on a unit which had not seen action all season.

If they are going to stop Barkley/Hurts’ ground game effectively, however, Dallas will require a great defensive performance from its unit in order to stop it.

Offense

Cowboys outgain Raiders by amassing season-high 304 yards, led by Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris rushing for over 200 yards each in their victory, setting up an intriguing matchup against Philadelphia Eagles defense that has allowed less than 20 points in three consecutive games while amassing sacks and turnovers.

The Eagles have an excellent chance at ending the regular season strongly and earning one of the top two seeds in the NFC playoffs. Their game against the Cowboys on Sunday will be crucial, giving them their best shot at earning a first-round bye.

Last time these teams faced each other during the regular season, the Cowboys routed the Eagles 44-6 on Christmas Eve – an important divisional matchup that decided who clinched the NFC East title while eliminating one from playoff contention.

Gardner Minshew started for the Eagles, but could not prevent a season-high four turnovers against their archrivals – including an amazing play by Cowboys linebacker Lito Sheppard who stripped receiver Keyshawn Johnson off of the ball before recovering it for an 80-yard touchdown score! The Cowboys capitalized on these errors to their advantage.

After that, the Cowboys launched an offensive surge behind running backs Elliot and Morris, who each ran for over 100 yards. Other Dallas wideouts like George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb weren’t quite as productive but made enough plays to put the game out of reach for Philadelphia.

This was an unforgettable game, not only due to its score or weather delays. Before the game even kicked off, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Hurts made headlines by spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott before getting himself ejected for violating rules pertaining to personal conduct and getting himself banned from further competitions with them – not long before midnight Eastern Time saw this matchup take place – the toughest confrontation yet between these rivals since 2011.

Special Teams

In 2000, when Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys first met for their regular season opener for the first time ever in Dallas temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, Philadelphia employed an innovative plan by having players drink pickle juice to prevent cramps from occurring in an effort that led them to win an exciting close game that became known as the “Pickle Juice Game.”

On January 15, 1995, these teams met again in the NFC Divisional playoffs and again, the Eagles led at halftime but ultimately fell 31-7 to Dallas.

Eagles punter Tom Hutton’s botched field goal attempt prevented any opportunity for an Eagles comeback attempt; unfortunately this miscue kept them from getting close enough for an attempt at game-winning kick from within range of scoring.

In 2008, the Eagles and Cowboys squared off in Texas Stadium’s final Monday Night Football game in a fierce defensive battle, scoring seven lead changes during first-half play alone and recording the most first-half points ever seen on MNF before halftime.

Eagles held Cowboys to just one first-quarter touchdown compared to six for them but their offense lacked consistency throughout.

A highlight came when Xavier Gipson stripped receiver Keyshawn Johnson and it was recovered by defensive end Rodney McLeod who returned it for 41-yard touchdown return by defensive end Rodney McLeod during third quarter play!

On Christmas Day 2006, the Eagles stunned their division rival and broke a 13-game road losing streak with a 23-7 victory that gave them control of the NFC East and denied Dallas Cowboys a chance at receiving a first round bye in the playoffs.

On February 21st 2010, these teams met again in the NFC Championship Game. It is notable for a controversial incident late in the third quarter when Cowboys’ Roy Williams hit Eagles defensive back Michael Vick with a horse-collar tackle that caused an ankle fracture, sidelining him for the rest of the season and ultimately helping them win this battle against them (preventing their second consecutive NFC title win by them). The Eagles would go on to lose this contest; Cowboys victory prevented another championship win from them!
