The Lakers surged out to an early 77-57 lead in the opening quarter, matching their best start of the season and highest period this year.
The Lakers then held the Pelicans without a field goal for more than four minutes in the third quarter and late in that quarter LeBron James made two free throws and scored on a breakaway dunk to push their advantage to 95-88.
The Lakers have gone 11-2 since adding Doncic to the team, with James averaging 27 points over his past five games while also collecting 13 rebounds and eight assists for this victory.
Their win put them second place in the Western Conference at 33-26; additionally it marked their third straight without injured starters Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.

In recognition of his performance he was selected to participate in the 2019 NBA All-Star Game as well as earning Most Improved Player accolades – widely considered one of the best point guards from his class;

Jaxson Hayes
Jaxson Hayes is a center for the Los Angeles Lakers. Drafted as the 8th pick overall (8th round of 8 draft picks), he averages 7.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game this season. Standing 7 feet and 220 pounds, Hayes attended Jefferson-Scranton High School in Jefferson Iowa while his mother Kristi was an honorable mention Kodak All-American as a senior basketball player at Drake University, garnering both Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year honors during her senior season (1994-1995).

Lakers forward Jaxson Hayes has officially received his Slovenian passport, making him eligible to represent his national team in international competitions. Hayes began the naturalization process back in October and told reporters it was important because it will help him build rapport with Lakers star Luka Doncic – born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma but currently on part-time roster status with Lakers before becoming unrestricted free agent next summer.
Deandre Ayton
Deandre Ayton emerged as one of the standout players at last year’s draft and could emerge as a standout at NBA level. He has the potential to be both an effective center and scoring threat from outside.
At present though, Ayton must continue working on his game; learning to deal with media attention while developing himself properly while strengthening defensively in order to create impact in the post area is essential for his future success.
Ayton recorded two points in heavy minutes, but failed to have the impact many were anticipating. Going against Rockets big man Alperen Sengun proved tough; although some positives could be found such as his energy and willingness to play in the paint; overall he must improve against bigger opponents as well as improve his defense overall.
The Lakers started strong, shooting 62% from the field and leading 46-27 at halftime with 62% field goal shooting and 77 first-half points – their most in any quarter this season. New Orleans made some strides during the third quarter but could never catch up to Los Angeles, leading by as little as one point until LeBron James dunked and hit a three to put them up 97-90 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation play.
